Stephen Fry

In an unexpected yet arguably rather brilliant bit of casting, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug star Stephen Fry (who is obviously already an extremely familiar face in the UK thanks to the likes of QI and Kingdom) has signed up to play the British Prime Minister in 24: Live Another Day.

The event series is set to run for 12 episodes and picks up with Jack Bauer four years after the events of season eight. Deadline describes Fry’s part in the series as “a high-profile recurring role”, adding that the PM he is playing will be named Trevor Davies and that the character is, “a strong and charismatic leader whose friendship with President Heller, and the Anglo-American alliance itself, come under tremendous pressure because of personal and political crises.”

Joining Fry and Kiefer Sutherland (Pompeii) will be Mary Lynn Rajskub, Kim Raver and William Devane reprising their original roles, while newcomers include Yvonne Strahovski (last seen in Dexter), Giles Matthey, The Wire’s Gbenga Akinnagbe, Michael Wincott and Judy Davis. The latest addition to the cast is Tate Donovan as White House Chief of Staff Mark Boudreau.

24: Live Another Day is set to debut (in the US at least) with a special two-hour premiere on Monday, May 5th. What do you guys think about Stephen Fry joining the series?
