So, it turns out the rumours are true. Sony has just bought cloud Gaming service Gaikai for a tidy sum of 0 million (£243 million)

Rumours of the potential acquisition have been doing the rounds since before E3 with many expecting an announcement at the Sony press conference. This never materialised and the rumours soon disappeared. Until today that is.

Andrew House, SCE President said ‘By combining Gaikai’s resources including its technological strength and engineering talent with SCE’s extensive game platform knowledge and experience, SCE will provide users with unparalleled cloud entertainment experiences,’

‘SCE will deliver a world-class cloud-streaming service that allows users to instantly enjoy a broad array of content ranging from immersive core games with rich graphics to casual content anytime, anywhere on a variety of internet-connected devices.’

‘SCE has built an incredible brand with PlayStation and has earned the respect of countless millions of gamers worldwide,’ said Gaikai CEO David Perry.

‘We’re honoured to be able to help SCE rapidly harness the power of the interactive cloud and to continue to grow their ecosystem, to empower developers with new capabilities, to dramatically improve the reach of exciting content and to bring breathtaking new experiences to users worldwide.’

The buyout means that the long rumoured PS4 will now come with a well established cloud gaming service, which will also be an important factor in delivering games to the PS Vita. The perfect fit for cloud gaming on the go. The next-gen and inevitable console war has just heated up a whole lot. Microsoft, it’s over to you.
