Tippi Hedren, a cigarette and an empty playground are all Hitchcock needs to send shivers down our collective spines. The build up to this moment, the sense of disbelief and dread in the community, the small steps towards an unimagined and unlikely attack all pay off here as Hitchcock lingers on his heroine before confirming her, and our own, worst fear. It is a masterpiece of editing and with a flourish Hitchcock gleefully sticks in the knife no-one knew was even there.
