Black Panther’s Ryan Coogler is strapping on his trainers and going back to the basketball court to produce Warner Bros. Space Jam sequel.

Coogler will produce the film which is expected to start production during the NBA offseason in 2019. Terence Nance (Random Acts of Flyness) helms the project, replacing Justin Lin who was originally attached.

LeBron James – who will be starring in the film told The Hollywood ReporterI loved his vision” for Black Panther, He went on to comment that when he was a kid growing up in Akron, Ohio, there were no black superheroes. “So for Ryan to be able to bring that to kids, it’s amazing.

The Space Jam collaboration is so much more than just me and the Looney Tunes getting together and doing this movie,” says James, “It’s so much bigger. I’d just love for kids to understand how empowered they can feel and how empowered they can be if they don’t just give up on their dreams. And I think Ryan did that for a lot of people.”

No plot details have been made available as yet but its 1996 predecessor presents an alternate history of what happened between Jordan’s initial retirement from the NBA in 1993 and his comeback in 1995, in which he is enlisted by Bugs Bunny and his friends to help them win a basketball match against a group of aliens who want to enslave them for their amusement park. The film also served to introduce a new Looney Tunes character, Bugs’ love interest Lola Bunny.

Coogler hasn’t hit a bum note as yet with both Fruitvale Station and Creed amongst his exceptional credits making him one of Hollywoods hottest filmmaking properties.
