A couple of amateur photographs have been taken on the set of the new Planet of the Ages reboot/re-imagining, Rise of the Apes.

io9.com posted the images of an actor, decked out in a motion-capture suit and holding (in one photo) what looks like two sawn-off crouches, while hunched over in an ape-like pose. Will be interesting to see how the finished CG will compare to the previous films in the series, which all relied on the good old-fashioned actor in make-up device.

Rise’s story takes place in present day San Francisco, where experimentations in genetic engineering lead to the development of intelligence in apes and their attempted domination over man.

The film has  managed to attract an interesting cast, including James Franco, Tom Felton, John Lithgow, Freida Pinto, Brian Cox (who worked on director Rupert Wyatt’s debut feature, 2008’s The Escapist) and Andy Serkis as a simian called Caesar (whose resume must now be filled with more animal roles than human!).

Rise of the Apes is due for release next summer.
