Following The Force Awakens next year, 2016 will see the release of the first in a number of Star Wars spinoff movies, with Gareth Edwards (Godzilla) helming the first and Josh Trank (Chronicle) doing the next in 2018. That’s right, for the forseeable future, we really are going to be getting yearly Star Wars movies!

J.J. Abrams is currently hard at work on Episode VII, and Looper’s Rian Johnson will take over for Episode VIII. As mysterious as those movies may be, the spinoffs are even more secretive! However, we may now know what the first of these will focus on, and it’s fair to say that’s it not what any of us were expecting!

According to a new report, the spotlight will be put on a group of bounty hunters hired by the Rebel Alliance to steal the plans of the first Death Star. There’s no word on which characters will be included (you have to imagine that Boba Fett will be in there somewhere), but this obviously means that it will be set before the events of the Original Trilogy, just like the new – and so far well-received – Star Wars Rebels cartoon.

Interestingly, it’s believed that the Millennium Falcon will be included but that Han Solo will NOT.

It could be then that the focus will instead be on a young Lando Calrissian, but that’s purely speculation at this point. One thing the site does know however is that the lead character of this spinoff will first be introduced in Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens, so we’ll obviously be meeting a much older version of him or her in that movie. Max von Syndow certainly fits the bill, but we’re going to have to wait and see!
