If Pedro Almodóvar is after a leading, Penelope Cruz will always be the top of his casting list. This has proved true as the pair are set to reunite again on the new feature ‘Madres paralelas’.

Almodóvar’s much-returned to theme, motherhood, is yet again the heart of the story. It will focus on two mothers who give birth the same day and will follow their parallel lives over their first and second years raising their children.

Whilst Cruz remains the favourite to lead the charge, there are no formal contracts in place just yet.

“Though there is still no formal contract with Cruz, she has read and liked the screenplay”, Pedro Almodóvar commented.

Set in Madrid, pre-production is due to commence in October with a potential February shoot date.

Almodóvar and Cruz have worked on numerous films together including ‘Volver’, ‘Broken Embraces’ and his latest ‘Pain and Glory’.

The latter was a semi-autobiographical in nature were the most memorable scenes were inspired by memories of his own inspirational relationship with his mother. It made its international debut at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival, where the film was selected to compete for the Palme d’Or, while Banderas won the award for Best Actor and Alberto Iglesias won for Best Soundtrack. It was nominated as the Spanish entry for Best International Feature Film at the 92nd Academy Awards, with Banderas also being nominated for Best Actor (his first such nomination).
