It’s official! Patrick Stewart is to reprise his role of Jean-Luc Picard in a brand new Star Trek series from CBS All Access.

Whispers and rumours had been making the circuit amongst Trekkies for a while but the latest Star Trek Trek convention in Las Vegas, Stewart finally made the official announcement.

It is an unexpected but delightful surprise to find myself excited and invigorated to be returning to Jean-Luc Picard and to explore new dimensions within him. During these past years, it has been humbling to hear stories about how ‘The Next Generation’ brought people comfort, saw them through difficult periods in their lives or how the example of Jean-Luc inspired so many to follow in his footsteps, pursuing science, exploration, and leadership.

I feel I’m ready to return to him for the same reason — to research and experience what comforting and reforming light he might shine on these often very dark times.

It’s still early days on the new Star Trek venture, Stewart later confirmed that there weren’t any scripts in place as yet. However, the plot line will concentrate on the next chapter of Picard’s life. The news that we don’t have yet another reboot on the cards is a breath of fresh air.

Alex Kurtzman – who acts as executive producer on Star Trek Discovery – is involved in some capacity on the new chapter. He went on to state his joy at revisiting the character of Picard for his many loyal fans.

“With overwhelming joy, it’s a privilege to welcome Sir Patrick Stewart back to the ‘Star Trek’ fold. For over 20 years, fans have hoped for the return of Captain Jean-Luc Picard and that day is finally here. We can’t wait to forge new ground, surprise people, and honour generations both new and old.”

The finer details are yet to be worked out, you’ll just have to wait patiently to find out when exactly when the series will be aired.
