Gerard Butler

2013’s Olympus Has Fallen was a surprise hit in the US (earning a little under 0 million), so it perhaps shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise to learn that Focus Features has acquired US distribution rights to London Has Fallen, the sequel which will see Gerard Butler return as Mike Banning.

London Has Fallen is set to be released on October 2nd, 2015, and will bring the action to London, where the British Prime Minister has passed away under mysterious circumstances.

As you might expect, his funeral is a must-attend event for leaders of the Western world, but what starts out as the most protected event on earth, turns into a deadly plot to kill the world’s most powerful leaders and unleash what is described as a terrifying vision of the future.

Only three people have any hope of stopping it: the President of the United States, his formidable secret service head (a.k.a. Mike Banning), and an English MI-6 agent who rightly trusts no one.

That’s basically the official logline, and while a sequel was unexpected after a worldwide box office total of only 1 million, it’s certainly a pretty interesting premise. 24: Live Another Day (the upcoming limited series which picks up after the events of season eight) also takes place in the UK, while the majority of Marvel’s Thor: The Dark World brought the Thunder God to this side of the pond as well.

Creighton Rothenberger and Katrin Benedikt co-wrote the script with Christian Gudegast, and a director has not been named as of yet. Whether Aaron Eckhart and Morgan Freeman will return remains to be seen, while the role of the English MI-6 agent is sure to be highly sought after.
