Arriving in US theatres this Friday, Cloud Atlas is one of the biggest blockbusters of the year; an impressive cinematic feat made outside of the studio system by Lana Wachowski, Tom Tykwer, and Andy Wachowski.

The trio wrote and directed the film themselves, assembling one of the biggest casts in recent memory, and with its release just two days away, a new featurette has landed online.

““Cloud Atlas” explores how the actions and consequences of individual lives impact one another throughout the past, the present and the future. Action, mystery and romance weave dramatically through the story as one soul is shaped from a killer into a hero and a single act of kindness ripples across centuries to inspire a revolution in the distant future.”

Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Jim Sturgess, Doona Bae, Ben Whishaw, Jim Broadbent, Hugo Weaving, James D’Arcy, Xun Zhou, Keith David, David Gyasi, Susan Sarandon, and Hugh Grant head the impeccable ensemble, with each taking multiple roles across the various plots.

The Wachowkski siblings and Tykwer adapted the original best-selling novel by David Mitchell, previously considered unadaptable, which was one of the reasons they were forced to make it outside the system when they failed to find financing in the US.

I really liked the film at its premiere at TIFF – you can read our review here – but it’s one that has been a bit divisive amongst critics. With its US release just days away, it will be very interesting to see how it’s received amongst audiences.

Cloud Atlas will be released in regular and IMAX theatres in the US this Friday, 26th October. Here in the UK, we have a little longer to wait, with it set for a 22nd February release in the New Year, but it is very much worth the wait to see such an impressive feat.
