Very little is known about Aquaman as of right now other than the fact that the 2018 movie is going to be directed by James Wan (Fast and Furious 7) with Jason Momoa starring.

However, a new report may shed some light on what we should expect. For starters, it’s said that Aquaman’s main villain will be Ocean Master, the titular hero’s half brother who has clashed with the King of Atlantis many times in the past (their viewpoints on how to deal with with the surface world differ greatly, and it sounds like they’ll be fighting for the throne).

Another key role Warner Bros. are looking to cast is Mera, Aquaman’s love interest. However, the movie is going to do more than just make her a Queen who waits back in Atlantis for her man to return; she’ll be a “force to be reckoned with” and looks set to share the screen with Aquaman very much the same was as Furiosa did with Max in Fury Road.

Interestingly, despite the character typically being portrayed as Caucasian with red hair, the studio is looking for a non-white actress. That makes sense, especially as they haven’t gone down the route of casting a blonde haired, blue eyed actor for the role of Aquaman.

JoBlo goes on to add that diversity is going to be a big part of the DC Extended Universe, with a Birds of Prey movie (featuring a team of female heroes) and possibly even a Teen Titans spinoff with Cyborg as the lead currently being mulled over by the studio. Green Lantern Corps meanwhile is set to be a “Lethal Weapon in space” team-up starring Hal Jordan and the African America Jon Stewart. They’re also considering a gay superhero!

One area Marvel has been criticised for in the past is a lack of diversity, and while Captain Marvel and Black Panther will change that, the DCEU may end up the real game changer!
