The Master PosterPaul Thomas Anderon’s The Master, his follow-up to 2007’s Oscar-winning There Will Be Blood, will be heading to Venice at the start of next month, and the anticipation is naturally buzzing. The writer-director has five Oscar nominations to his name, and expectations are for him to be adding to that this year.

Philip Seymour Hoffman and Joaquin Phoenix star opposite each other in the leads, and after getting a pretty remarkable first trailer last month, the film’s official site has debuted a new clip.

“Written and directed by Academy Award nominee Paul Thomas Anderson (the acclaimed director of, There Will Be Blood, Magnolia and Boogie Nights), this story stars Academy Award winner Philip Seymour Hoffman (Capote) and Academy Award-nominee Joaquin Phoenix (Walk the Line). Set in America in the years following World War II, a charismatic intellectual (Hoffman) launches a faith-based organization and taps a young drifter (Phoenix) as his right-hand man. But as the faith begins to gain a fervent following, the one time vagabond finds himself questioning the belief system he has embraced, and his mentor. A truly one-of-a-kind drama, which promises magnetic virtuoso performances, the film marks the fifth collaboration between Anderson and Hoffman, following Hard Eight, Boogie Nights, Magnolia, and Punch Drunk Love.”

Starring alongside Hoffman and Phoenix will be strong support in the form of Amy Adams, Laura Dern, Jesse Plemons, and David Warshovsky, with Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood (There Will Be Blood, Magnolia) composing the score.

The Master will debut at Venice next month, and will then head into US theatres on 14th September for a limited engagement, before opening wide on 21st September. Here in the UK, we’ll be getting its theatrical release on 9th November, but it definitely looks like it’s going to be worth the wait. For now, here’s the new clip for your viewing pleasure. Enjoy.
