Diana and The Glass Castle’s Naomi Watts has been cast to lead the charge in George R.R. Martin’s ‘Game of Thrones’ prequel.

Character details are being kept top secret but rumour has it she will be playing a prominent “charismatic socialite hiding a dark secret.”

The prequel will take place ten thousand years before the events of ‘Thrones,’ the project hails from beloved scribe Jane Goldman and chronicles the world’s descent from the Golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour.

Goldman co-created the project with George R.R. Martin. Watts is the first casting announcement, which means further name drops are imminent.

Earlier in the year, Martin had already confirmed that there were three more prequels in development covering different time periods.

“Three more ‘Game of Thrones’ prequels, set in different periods and featuring different characters and storylines, remain in active development. Everything I am told indicates that we could film at least one more pilot, and maybe more than one, in the years to come. We do have an entire world and tens of thousands of years of history to play with, after all. But this is television, so nothing is certain.”

He also confirmed that none of the current players would be appearing because of how far back they plan on taking the prequels.

None of the characters or actors from ‘Game of Thrones’ will appear in the new show…This one really puts the PRE in prequel, since it is set not ninety years before ‘Game of Thrones’ (like ‘Dunk & Egg’), or a few hundred years, but rather ten thousand years (well, assuming the oral histories of the First Men are accurate, but there are maesters at the Citadel who insist it has only been half that long)”.

Martin, Goldman, Daniel Zelman, James Farrell, Jim Danger Gray, and Vince Gerardis will executive produce.
