With two months left on the countdown clock before Wes Anderson’s highly anticipated new film, Moonrise Kingdom, is released, we have something a little different to share with you from the twice Oscar-nominated writer-director.

Anderson has teamed up with Sony to work on their latest campaign for the Sony Xperia smartphone, and the commercial/mini-short that he created for them is truly wonderful – and of course we’d expect nothing less.

The Xperia’s tagline is ‘Made of Imagination’, and in the first video, Sony say,

“So to create our new campaign, we turned to the most imaginative people we know. Kids.”

And asked them what’s inside Sony smartphones that makes them so special.

Enter Wes Anderson.

Working with Laika, the animation house that created Coraline and the upcoming ParaNorman, Anderson created an ad ‘As imagined by Jake Ryan (age 8)’, and the result is fantastic: A minute-long stop-motion animated video that is one of the best adverts I can remember seeing in recent years.

Ordinarily, I’m not much of a sucker for a good marketing campaign, but if I were looking for a new phone, this would almost definitely have me hooked. Partially because it’s Wes Anderson, partially because it’s a brilliant advert, and partially because the phone looks more than a little bit beautiful. See what you think.
