Get ready to dive back into the magical world of Moana! The highly-anticipated sequel to the beloved Disney animation is finally here, and it’s just as heart-warming as the first one.

Directed by David Derrick Jr., Jason Hand, and Dana Ledoux Miller, Moana 2 brings back the same adventurous spirit that made the first film such an instant classic for audiences young and old.

Three years after the events of the first film, Moana (voiced by the amazing Auli’i Cravalho) is back and ready for another epic adventure. The ocean calls, and she answers, gathering a crew of shambolic misfits to break a wicked curse on the secret island of Motufetu. The teenager is reunited with the legendary demigod Maui (Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson) and battles both old enemies like the Kakamora and a new villain, the underworld goddess Matangi (Awhimai Fraser).

New characters, like award-winning Kiwi comedienne Rose Matafeo’s quirky crew member Loto and Khaleesi Lambert-Tsuda as Moana’s younger sister Simea, bring fresh energy to the proceedings.

Visually, Moana 2 is a stunning achievement. The animation brings the vast Pacific Ocean to life with breathtaking detail, while the enchanted island of Motufetu is a vibrant tapestry of colour and intricate design.

The score, composed by returning talents Mark Mancina and Opetaia Foaʻi, along with newcomers Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, is a harmonious blend of traditional Polynesian sounds and modern musical sensibilities. While the soundtrack may not quite reach the iconic heights of its predecessor, Go Beyond stands out as a powerful anthem that captures the spirit of Moana.

The film’s pacing can feel a little uneven at times, with some sequences feeling needlessly overstretched. For instance, the opening chapter, while visually stunning and full of fun and quirky slapstick moments, feels more detailed than it needs to be, slowing down the overall momentum of the film. The extended introduction to the island of Motufetu, while rich in world-building, could have been condensed to allow for a quicker progression to the main plot. Additionally, some of the side quests and character introductions, while entertaining, can sometimes feel like distractions from the central narrative.

Moana 2 is undeniably a worthy sequel that expands the world and mythology of the original while retaining its heart and sense of wonder. It’s a visually dazzling adventure with compelling central characters, epic stakes, and plenty of charm. While some aspects could have been explored further, it’s a fun and heartfelt continuation that will leave audiences eager for more.
