There had been rumours, but now a new Bourne movie actually starring title character Jason Bourne is said to be officially in the works at Universal. Both Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass have talked about the possibility of returning for another instalment, though it seemed like it was never going to happen.

The franchise kicked off with the well-received The Bourne Identity, but the series found even greater success when Greengrass came in to helm the follow-ups The Bourne Supremacy and Ultimatum.

The studio are in fact so keen on prioritising this team-up that they are planning on giving this film the release date originally set aside for the Justin Lin helmed sequel to the pretty uninspiring The Bourne Legacy which starred American Hustle actor Jeremy Renner as Aaron Cross. Bourne without Bourne if you will.

What that means is we could see this new Bourne as soon as July 16th, 2016. Exciting times!

That movie is still in development, but it’s easy to understand their decision to prioritise another team-up between Damon and Greengrass and to continue the original Bourne trilogy. Of course, Universal – who have no superhero franchises – now have two potential Bourne series’ to exploit, so this is win/win for them.

It was recently revealed that the Captain Phillips helmer would next be setting his sights on The Ballad of Richard Jewell, and more details on that can be found by clicking here.
