Despite the glut of remakes currently in production HeyUGuys is looking forward to Robert Rodriguez’s forthcoming Predators, and in reporting on its gestation we posted a couple of videos of writer Alex Litvak talking about his work on the film. He discusses his pleasure in reinvigorating a well loved film franchise which had lost its way, and he had a lot of good things to say about walking the fine line between updating and respecting the established characters.

You can find those videos here and here, and they are both worth a watch, not least because according to Heat Vision Litvak and his Predators co-writer Mike Finch have been hired by Columbia to write the new Masters of the Universe movie.

Columbia picked up the pieces of a broken creative relationship between toy makers Mattel and Warner Bros and the project seems to be moving into production quickly – no doubt they’ll be a Spider-Man/Captain America style casting frenzy on the cards pretty soon –  Channing Tatum is sure to be one of the first to be mentioned.

Obviously there are no more details just yet, but I’m hoping that the movie sticks to one setting as the Eternia/Earth mess of the 1987 Dolph Lundgren version annoyed me more than it should have done. Oh, and no CGI Orko please.

Listening to Litvak talk about Predators its clear that his goal is to create a coherent and exciting film which is faithful to the property but enough to move it into a new century. Good attitude if you ask me, and we’ll see how successful he and Finch are when Predators hit this summer.

Let’s hope they honour the cartoon by having a post credits sequence where He-Man explains the moral of the story to camera before wishing the movie audience a good ride home. I’d pay to see that.
