‘The Invisible Man’ helmer Leigh Whannell is currently in negotiations to take the directors chair for Universal feature ‘The Green Hornet and Kato.’

The classic story focuses on Britt Reid, owner-publisher of The Daily Sentinel. Armed with knowledge from his sources, cool weapons, a supercar known as the Black Beauty, and teamed with his trusty aide Kato, Reid became The Green Hornet, a vigilante crime fighter wanted by the police and feared by the criminal world.

Sources say by going in Whannell’s direction, the story will deviate from the 2011 version, viewers can expect a more serious action thriller that would work toward his strengths.

David Koepp submitted a script for the project earlier this year. Michael Helfant, the former president of Marvel Studios, and Bradley Gallo will produce the film for Amasia.

Whannell made a name for himself while working under James Wan on the ‘Saw’ and ‘Insidious’ franchises. He went on to helm the action thriller ‘Upgrade’ and most recently ‘The Invisible Man.’
