There were many things wrong with the second and third installments of Pirates of the Caribbean, including an increasing and unnecessary narrative complexity and an ill-conceived determination for all concerned to take the whole venture far too seriously.

All of which made Keith Richards’ cameo in At Worlds End (as Jack Sparrow’s father) such a welcome relief, puncturing the bloated mythology and bogged-down narrative convolutions with some much needed levity, which had been so significant an element in the first film’s appeal in the first place.

Good news ahoy, then, as Yahoo! drop the briefest of mentions into an article about Keith Richards’ new autobiography, that he will reprise his role as Sparrow’s dad in the upcoming POTC sequel, On Stranger Tides.

Whether On Stranger Tides will prove to match the first film’s more jaunty, enjoyable tone or will prefer to go for broke with set pieces and more plot twists and turns like the increasingly inferior sequels so far, we will see.

Dave has been writing for HeyUGuys since mid-2010 and has found them to be the most intelligent, friendly, erudite and insightful bunch of film fans you could hope to work with. He's gone from ham-fisted attempts at writing the news to interviewing Lawrence Bender, Renny Harlin and Julian Glover, to writing articles about things he loves that people have actually read. He has fairly broad tastes as far as films are concerned, though given the choice he's likely to go for Con Air over Battleship Potemkin most days. He's pretty sure that 2001: A Space Odyssey is the most overrated mess in cinematic history.
