Remember that baffling deleted scene Warner Bros. released shortly after Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice? At the time, many fans theorised that that was Steppenwolf, Darkseid’s uncle and the military leader of Apokolips. Surely he’ll just be a supporting player in Justice League backing up iconic DC Comics bad guy Darkseid, right? Well, not exactly.

According to a new report, Steppenwolf is going to end up being the lead villain of the movie, a baffling decision considering the fact that he’s a pretty uninteresting D-List bad guy at best.

On the plus side, that gives director Zack Snyder a blank slate to work with and Birth.Movies.Death mentions that Darkseid is going to show up at the end of the movie, presumably to set him up as the big bad of Justice League 2. However, with no script for the sequel currently in place (Chris Terrio has only written the first), there’s no guarantee a follow-up will even happen, especially after the tepid response to Batman v Superman.

Looking at the design of Steppenwolf, it’s hard to escape the feeling that Justice League will end up being 80% Batman assembling the team, then 20% fighting a forgettable baddie

For now, it’s obviously best to take this with a pinch of salt as it is just a rumour, but here’s hoping Snyder and Warner Bros. have something special planned for Justice League which will make up for this rather unexciting choice of villain for the team to square off against.
