While Peter Jackson gets ready to wow us all again with The Hobbit, plans are in the making for a movie about The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings author himself, J.R.R. Tolkien, THR report.

The film will be based on the novel Mirkwood, written by Steven Millard, who has just signed a deal with EMO Films and secured the help of EMO’s Joel Eisenberg and Timothy Owens as executive producers.

As Hillard confirmed, “the adaptation of Mirkwood will follow the template of the novel” – it will centre on a fictional version of J.R.R.Tolkien and explore his “little-known back story, such as his original plans to become a codebreaker in World War II up through the writing of his enduring works.”

And the speculative nature of his book is just what got Hillard in hot water with the Tolkien estate earlier this year, following the estate’s claims that Mirkwood “would infringe upon Tolkien’s name and likeness” if published. The novel came out after the parties agreed on a settlement – and after Hillard described it as “a work of literary criticism”.

We can’t wait to see what they will think of the movie…
