To celebrate the release of F1, the latest full-pelt cinematic experience from Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski, we had the distinct pleasure to sit down for an extended chat with the film’s producer, the legendary Jerry Bruckheimer, to find out more about the film and his extraordinary career.
Dubbed “the greatest that never was,” Sonny Hayes (Brad Pitt) was FORMULA 1’s most promising phenom of the 1990s until an accident on the track nearly ended his career. Thirty years later, he’s a nomadic racer-for-hire when he’s approached by his former teammate Ruben Cervantes (Javier Bardem), owner of a struggling FORMULA 1 team that is on the verge of collapse. Ruben convinces Sonny to come back to FORMULA 1 for one last shot at saving the team and being the best in the world. He’ll drive alongside Joshua Pearce (Damson Idris), the team’s hotshot rookie, intent on setting his own pace. But as the engines roar, Sonny’s past catches up with him and he finds that in FORMULA 1, your teammate is your fiercest competition—and the road to redemption is not something you can travel alone.
Kerry Condon, Tobias Menzies, Kim Bodnia, and Javier Bardem co-star and has been shot during actual Grand Prix weekends as the team competes against the titans of the sport.
Talking to Bruckheimer, we chat about the film’s beginnings and how he and Kosinski (and their amazing crew of filmmakers) wanted to push the boundaries of filmmaking again, shooting with fifteen cameras inside real F1 cars and Pitt, Idris and others competed around the tracks, how Top Gun: Maverick helped pathfind the film, sequels and much more.
We also delved into his incredible back catalogue to talk about his legacy in cinema, pushing filmmakers and actors beyond what they think is possible, the film he wished he had made, the sequel he wished he had gotten to make and more.
He also confirms work is ongoing for Top Gun 3 and Days of Thunder 2 – both of which Tom Cruise wants to make – as well as some updates on Pirates of the Caribbean and , National Treasure 3 (fingers crossed!), as well as the Gone in 60 Seconds sequel, he would love to make.
