Having already made a huge splash at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, Farewell Amor is finally getting a release in the UK and it comes at a time when we all staking stock of what is important and about family. Written and directed by Ekwa Msangi, the film tells the story of an Angolan woman, Esther (Zainab Jah), and her daughter, Sylvia (Jayme Lawson), who reunites with her husband Walter (Ntare Mwine) after spending 17 years in exile. Now, strangers, find common ground in their shared love of dance.

We spoke to Lawson about what drew her to the film, her character Sylvia and her journey, the vivid immigrant story at the heart of it, and why Msangi’s distinctive story captures the immigrant experiences perfectly. We also couldn’t let her go without talking about her new film – The Batman, opposite Robert Pattinson as The Dark Knight.
