We’ve not had much news to report on The Mortal Instruments for a while now, since we heard that the production was in limbo, pending confirmation of Alex Pettyfer’s availability for the lead. Whether it’s because his Number Four was a bit of a Number Two, or because his Beastly proved just Ghastly, but Pettyfer seems to have been bypassed as a consideration and in his place one Jamie Campbell Bower has been cast as the lead.

For the uninitiated (including me), The Mortal Instruments is a series of novels by Cassandra Clare, about a heroine ClaryFray who has The Sight. She can see demons and Shadowhunters and one of these Shadowhunters is Jace Wayland, who helps Clary find her mother after she is abducted. We knew Lily Collins was set to play Clary Fray and now Mr Campbell Bower has apparently been cast as Jace Wayland. Those who pay significant attention to such things will know that Campbell Bower has previously starred in Burton’s Sweeney Todd, RocknRolla, New Moon and Deathly Hallows Pt 1. Obviously this makes him far from a novice, but expect this role to have the potential to send him stratospheric. Or it might not.

Scott Charles Stewart (Priest, Legion) is still attached to direct.

Dave has been writing for HeyUGuys since mid-2010 and has found them to be the most intelligent, friendly, erudite and insightful bunch of film fans you could hope to work with. He's gone from ham-fisted attempts at writing the news to interviewing Lawrence Bender, Renny Harlin and Julian Glover, to writing articles about things he loves that people have actually read. He has fairly broad tastes as far as films are concerned, though given the choice he's likely to go for Con Air over Battleship Potemkin most days. He's pretty sure that 2001: A Space Odyssey is the most overrated mess in cinematic history.
