MTV caught up with James McAvoy who is to star as Charles Xavier in the new X-Men movie which has the title – X-Men: First Class. In the interview, he spoke about trying to ‘bury’ Patrick Stewart’s version of Xavier from the previous movies and try to make the character his own, to evolve into the man that Stewart portrays in the later movies.

Transcription from MTV:

“I think the fun about these films, when you go back and you either reboot or do a prequel, is you get to see how people became who they are,” he explained. “That means that you have to do them differently and by the end of the movie you have to do them the same way. The interesting journey is what happens to them, what changes them, what makes them evolve — not just mutate, but emotionally and psychologically evolve.”

“I would suggest by the end of the movie and the start of the next movie, it’ll be more like what Patrick does,” he added. “Or maybe not. Maybe it will still be in a period of flux, if there is a new movie.”

X-Men: First class is directed by Matthew Vaughn, with a screenplay by Jane Goldman and stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Lucas Till, Kevin Bacon and Oliver Platt.

Synopsis: Before Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Before they were archenemies, they were closest of friends, working together, with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to stop the greatest threat the world has ever known. In the process, a rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto’s Brotherhood and Professor X’s X-MEN.
