Charlotte Gainsbourg is the latest addition to the cast of Independence Day 2, a fairly major departure for the actress best known for roles in Lars von Trier’s films like Nymphomaniac, Antichrist, and Melancholia.

There are no details on who she will play unfortunately, but Gainsbourg joins a cast which also includes Liam Hemsworth, Jessie Usher, and Jeff Goldblum. Usher actually plays the son of Will Smith’s character from the first movie. Independence Day grossed over $800 million when it was released back in 1996.

There had been talk of Independence Day 2 being split into two movies, but the plan is to now make just a single film which will be released in 2016. Carter Blanchard rewrote the script which had initially been penned by Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin, with James Vanderbilt also contributing. The latest draft comes from James A. Woods and Nicolas Wright. Finding the right story was clearly a challenge!

Unfortunately, as has been previously reported, Will Smith is still NOT expected to reprise the role which played a big part in making him a household name back in 1996. He’ll be busy with Suicide Squad anyway.

Independence Day has developed a passionate fanbase over the years, but whether or not a sequel will be embraced nearly 20 years since the release of the first remains to be seen. Are you looking forward to it?
