The BBC and MGM+ have unveiled a major new wave of casting for ‘Legacy of Spies,’ the highly anticipated espionage thriller from The Ink Factory based on the acclaimed works of John le Carré.
Leading the latest additions are Hugh Laurie (The Night Manager, House) and Joe Alwyn (The Brutalist, The Favourite), who have officially signed on to portray Control and Jim Prideaux, two pivotal figures within the shadowy world of British intelligence.
The newly announced cast also includes Anjana Vasan (We Are Lady Parts, Black Mirror: Demon 79) as Connie Sachs, Charlotte Ritchie (You, Ghosts) as Ann Smiley, and Lee Ross (Andor, White Gold) as Inspector Oliver Mendel.
Joining the upper ranks of the infamous Circus intelligence service are James McArdle (Mare of Easttown, Playing Nice) as Percy Alleline, John Dagleish (Sexy Beast, 3 Body Problem) as Roy Bland, and Goran Bogdan (The Last Panthers, Father) as Toby Esterhase. Adam Hugill (Sherwood, Dear England) has also been cast as Fawn, George Smiley’s formidable bodyguard and protector.
Laurie will portray Control, the enigmatic and powerful leader of The Circus. Known only by his codename, the character serves as George Smiley’s politically astute yet morally ambiguous superior, wielding influence over Britain’s covert intelligence operations.

Meanwhile, Alwyn steps into the role of Jim Prideaux, a charismatic and highly capable Circus operative whose unconventional field methods often create tension within the organisation’s London headquarters.
The latest casting announcements flesh out the world surrounding George Smiley and his closest allies.
Anjana Vasan will play Connie Sachs, the Circus’s legendary research chief and expert analyst on Soviet affairs. Charlotte Ritchie joins as Ann Smiley, George’s intelligent and emotionally complex wife, while Lee Ross portrays Inspector Oliver Mendel, a former police officer whose unwavering integrity makes him one of Smiley’s most trusted confidants.
Adam Hugill rounds out the group as Fawn, a dangerous and highly skilled operative assigned to protect Smiley.
The senior leadership of The Circus continues to come into focus with James McArdle cast as Percy Alleline, a calculating and elusive figure within the intelligence agency.
John Dagleish will portray Roy Bland, an ambitious officer climbing the ranks of British intelligence, while Goran Bogdan takes on the role of Toby Esterhase, the flamboyant émigré who occupies a key position among the Circus hierarchy.
The production has also added acclaimed filmmaker Claudia Llosa as a second director on the series. The Academy Award nominee and Golden Bear winner joins lead director and executive producer Michael Lennox behind the camera, bringing additional prestige to the ambitious adaptation.

The eight-part drama is written and showrun by Stephen Cornwell and Clarissa Ingram and marks the long-awaited return of master spy George Smiley to television.
Matthew Macfadyen leads the series as Smiley, with Charlie Hunnam starring as the battle-scarred intelligence operative Alec Leamas.
‘Legacy of Spies’ will premiere on BBC iPlayer and BBC One in the UK, with MGM+ serving as the U.S. home for the series.
