That’s right, they really are rebooting The Smurfs! However, this version looks set to be quite a bit different to its predecessors as it will be fully animated rather than mixing CGI characters with live-action actors.

The movie will serve as an origin story for the Smurfs, and just like in the original Peyo cartoon, Papa Smurf is supposed to be the wise, paternal leader of the Smurfs…even if that isn’t ALWAYS the case. So, who better to voice the character than the man who’s guided Carrie through the her dangerous missions in Homeland?

Mandy Patinkin is the first casting addition to The Smurfs, but we’re betting his Papa Smurf won’t be dropping as many F-bombs as the short tempered Saul Berenson! The actor is no stranger to animated movies, as his past credits in this area include Jock the Hero Dog and Hayao Miyazaki’s The Wind Rises.

The movie has a director in the form of Kelly Asbury. She helmed Shrek 2 and also worked as a story artist on Disney’s Frozen and Wreck-It Ralph. Jordan Kerner and Mary Ellen Bauder are on board as producers.

The Smurfs reboot is currently set to be released on August 5th, 2016. Are you looking forward to the movie?
