Back in 2010, Skyline looked like a movie which had the potential to be something great. Unfortunately, despite some impressive visual effects, it was terrible (as you can see by reading our 1* review).

The prospect of a sequel/spinoff likely fills you with dread then, but based on what we’re now hearing about it, Beyond Skyline may just end up being what the first should have been! Frank Grillo is the first major casting addition, and the Captain America: The Winter Soldier star will play a detective who fights to free his son from a terrifying alien warship. The action will be shot this December in in Indonesia and Singapore.

Liam O’Donnell penned the screenplay (and worryingly co-wrote the first), and will make his directorial debut with Beyond Skyline. He apparently wrote this part with Grillo in mind because he wanted someone who could be a, “throw-back action hero battling his inner demons while outwardly kicking ass.”

If you need further proof that this standalone spinoff is taking itself a little more seriously, look no further than the fact that The Raid: Redemption and The Raid 2’s Iko Uwais has also been cast in a lead role!

He’ll play the leader of an underground resistance that forms after aliens touch down on Earth, and will be joined in Beyond Skyline by Yayan Ruhian, his co-star in The Raid. The duo will serve as fight choreographers on the film, guaranteeing that we’ll get some amazing fight scenes if nothing else!
