Frequently cited as one of the scariest films of all time, Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining has endured and become so influential over the past three decades, permeating pop culture in the years since to such an extent as to be parodied in an episode of The Simpsons.

Rodney Ascher makes his feature-length documentary debut behind the camera in Room 237, taking us into some of the theories behind the meanings buried beneath the surface of Kubrick’s film, and now Metrodome have released the first trailer.

“Many cult movies have their own radical interpretations but none as rich and far-ranging as Stanley Kubrick’s THE SHINING.

In ROOM 237, we hear from people who believed they have decoded the far-reaching theories, hidden symbols and messages buried in the late director’s film. Carefully examining THE SHINING forwards and backwards, ROOM 237 is equal parts captivating, provocative and pure pleasure. A must see for movie buffs of all ages.”

Debuting back in January at Sundance, the film has spent the year on the festival circuit – you can read our review from TIFF here – and will finally be arriving in theatres here at the end of the month.

Room 237 will be released in the UK and Ireland on 26th October, which will see it going up against Skyfall – but naturally, the audiences are somewhat different, and both should be able to stand their own ground in carving out their market. No word yet on a US release, but with any luck, we’ll hear more on that soon. For now, here’s the first little tease. Enjoy.
