Starring Elijah Wood and Nora Arnezeder in the leads, Franck Khalfoun’s remake of the 1980 American slasher film, Maniac, will be debuting later this month out of competition at Cannes as part of the midnight line-up.

The first official images have made their way online through the festival’s website showing off a bloodied Wood as Frank, the titular maniac, Arnezeder as the female lead, and what looks to be a pretty creepy mannequin.

“Just when the streets seemed safe, a serial killer with a fetish for scalps is back and on the hunt.

Frank is the withdrawn owner of a mannequin store, but his life changes when young artist Anna appears asking for his help with her new exhibition. As their friendship develops and Frank’s obsession escalates, it becomes clear that she has unleashed a long-repressed compulsion to stalk and kill.”

Khalfoun is directing from a script co-written by frequent collaborators Alexandre Aja and Grégory Lavesseur (Switchblade Romance), with whom he co-wrote the script on P2, and newcomer C.A. Rosenberg.

Maniac will be debuting at Cannes on 26th May, and as yet hasn’t got a release date set for either side of the Atlantic. With a bit of luck, the film will get picked up for distribution in the UK and North America after a strong reception at the festival, and we’ll hopefully be able to look forward to seeing it on the big screen later this year. More as we get it. For now, here are the first images from the film. And as usual, you can click to enlarge.
