Rian Johnson’s Star Wars Episode VIII has started shooting sooner than expected (could this be fan after-credits scene for Star Wars: The Force Awakens?), and now the first photos from the set have surfaced. They don’t feature any of the cast just yet, but we do see the director and get a general idea of the kind of unique setting the 2017 movie is going to have.

Like The Force Awakens, they’re filming on Skellig Michael Island in Ireland, a location which has been rumoured in the past to have something to do with Luke Skywalker…or possibly The Knights of Ren! There have after all been an awful lot of rumours in recent months.

Tents and tarps full of equipment were all over the island completely unguarded apart from one tent which lay on top of a fake sandy coloured rock built for the filming,” says one onlooker. “My guess is Luke will be standing on that tomorrow. Talking to people who I can’t name as they were afraid of getting in trouble, we discovered that there were definitely droids already locked away on the island (presumably BB-8 or R2-D2 or both, but couldn’t confirm because they hadn’t seen any of the movies). Along with the droids were weapons, presumably a lightsaber or two. We also discovered that the set had been described as a “Jedi Monastery”, (although I don’t know the validity of that) and scenes were to have wind and rain machines, which we later discovered and took photos that you can see here.”

Intriguing stuff, eh? Like Star Wars Episode VIII, The Force Awakens is a movie which we still have a lot of unanswered questions about. You can find the ten biggest by clicking here.
