Warner Bros. announced today that filming has begun on Tarzan 3D, and the first official synopsis of the movie reveals huge new details about the plot and setting of the latest live-action take on the legendary character (who will be played here by Alexander Skarsgård) created by Edgar Rice Burroughs.

Many people assumed that this version of Tarzan would be a reboot, introducing the iconic hero to a whole new generation of viewers. However, as you can see from the synopsis below, the movie will instead pick up with Tarzan at a later stage in his life; an area which hasn’t been explored that frequently.

It has been years since the man once known as Tarzan (Skarsgård) left the jungles of Africa behind for a gentrified life as John Clayton III, Lord Greystoke, with his beloved wife, Jane (Robbie) at his side. Now, he has been invited back to the Congo to serve as a trade emissary of Parliament, unaware that he is a pawn in a deadly convergence of greed and revenge, masterminded by the Belgian, Captain Leon Rom (Waltz). But those behind the murderous plot have no idea what they are about to unleash.

As Tarzan’s origin story is so well-known, not retreading old ground seems like a smart move.Tarzan

Along with Skarsgård, the cast also features Oscar nominee Samuel L. Jackson (Captain America), Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street), Oscar nominee Djimon Hounsou (Blood Diamond), Oscar nominee John Hurt (Harry Potter), and two-time Academy Award winner Christoph Waltz (Django Unchained).

Yates (who helmed the last four Harry Potter movies, including the hugely successful Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Parts 1 & 2) is shooting the movie at Warner Bros. Studios, Leavesden, as well as on location around the UK.  Tarzan 3D is currently set to be released on July 1st, 2016
