Thomas Hardy’s work has been adapted for the big and small screens almost as many times as Jane Austen. Thomas Vinterberg marks the latest in a long line of filmmakers to turn to Hardy’s literature for inspiration, and his adaptation of Far From the Madding Crowd is easily one of the most anticipated films next year has to offer.

Carey Mulligan takes centre stage as Bathsheba Everdene, and as we count down the months to its arrival next spring, Fox has launched a great first teaser trailer to help make the wait a little easier.

The story of independent, beautiful and headstrong Bathsheba Everdene (Carey Mulligan), who attracts three very different suitors: Gabriel Oak (Matthias Schoenaerts), a sheep farmer, captivated by her fetching willfulness; Frank Troy (Tom Sturridge), a handsome and reckless Sergeant; and William Boldwood (Michael Sheen), a prosperous and mature bachelor. This timeless story of Bathsheba’s choices and passions explores the nature of relationships and love – as well as the human ability to overcome hardships through resilience and perseverance.

Mulligan is in very good company here, with Matthias Schoenaerts, Tom Sturridge, and Michael Sheen topping the support, alongside Juno Temple and Jessica Barden.

Vinterberg is coming off the back of his 2012 drama, The Hunt, which earned widespread acclaim for Vinterberg, co-writer Tobias Lindholm, and leading man Mads Mikkelsen, in particular. This time around, he’s directing from a script by David Nicholls (One Day, Starter for 10).

Far From the Madding Crowd is set to be released in the UK and US on May 1st, 2015.
