This morning, something pretty amazing happened: The first trailer for Cloud Atlas hit, and it was spectacular.

Unfortunately, it leaked online a little early for the studio’s liking, but has now officially surfaced this afternoon, and brought with it a wonderful first poster, along with a little commentary from the three directors – Lana and Andy Wachowski and Tom Tykwer – giving a very interesting introduction to the difficult path they’ve had bringing the film to the big screen.

As they say, ‘The movie is hard to sell, because it’s hard to describe, it’s hard to reduce. So we decided to make a really, really, really long trailer, and just put it out there. We hope you like it.’

And we really, really do.

““Cloud Atlas” explores how the actions and consequences of individual lives impact one another throughout the past, the present and the future. Action, mystery and romance weave dramatically through the story as one soul is shaped from a killer into a hero and a single act of kindness ripples across centuries to inspire a revolution in the distant future.”

The three directors have co-written the script together, based on David Mitchell’s acclaimed novel of the same name, and have assembled a fantastic cast who, as you will see, take on multiple roles and characters across the centuries the film spans.

The cast is undeniably beyond impressive, headed up by Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Jim Broadbent, Hugo Weaving, Jim Sturgess, Doona Bae, Ben Whishaw, James D’Arcy, Xun Zhou, Keith David, David Gyasi, Susan Sarandon, and Hugh Grant.

Cloud Atlas will be released on 26th October, and by all accounts, we can almost certainly look forward to a strong awards campaign heading for the Oscars later this year. For now, I leave you with the official trailer, the directors’ commentary, and the first official poster.
