The LA Times are reporting that the Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos, whose film Dogtooth gained notoriety last year, has stated that his next project will be darker and more extreme than his last.

Dogtooth isn’t an easy watch by any means but is a fascinating and powerful film that deserved its nomination in the Best Foreign Language Picture at the most recent Academy Awards. Still, it divided audiences and critics with its explicit content and disturbing subject matter.

Lanthimos told the blog that his latest project would make Dogtooth look like Air Bud. Should make for nice, easy, viewing then. The film is titled Alps and focuses on a group of people who stand in for others who are recently deceased to help their loved ones with the grieving process. They do this by adopting character traits, mimicking mannerisms and so on.

Lanthimos says of the film; “It’s darker and funnier. Goes to each extreme a little more.” He hopes to have the film edited and ready to screen at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

If you have yet to catch up with Dogtooth; it’s available for rental on iTunes currently for the bargain price of 99p or from Lovefilm here.
