Dawn-of-the-Planet-of-the-Apes-LogoFollowing the half-billion-dollar success of the 2011 reboot, Fox have announced that principal photography is now officially underway on the sequel, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

At the helm this time around will be Matt Reeves, in place of original director Rupert Wyatt, and we can’t wait to see what Reeves and his fellow filmmakers will be bringing to the big screen next summer.

With production now begun out in New Orleans, the studio have released the sequel’s official synopsis, along with the logo for the blockbuster sequel.

A growing nation of genetically evolved apes led by Caesar is threatened by a band of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier. They reach a fragile peace, but it proves short-lived, as both sides are brought to the brink of a war that will determine who will emerge as Earth’s dominant species.

Andy Serkis reprises his role as the intelligent chimpanzee, Caesar, following his acclaimed performance in the original. And he is joined by a stellar cast, led by Jason Clarke, Keri Russell, Judy Greer, Gary Oldman, Toby Kebbell, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Enrique Murciano, and Kirk Acevedo.

Reeves (Cloverfield) is directing from a script originally penned by Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, with rewrites coming from Scott Z. Burns and Mark Bomback.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is set to be released on May 23rd, 2014, which currently positions it opening a week after next summer’s Godzilla and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. May 2014 is shaping up to be another immense month at the box office, just like this month.
