With a control system that saw the player performing a series of quick time events via the controller in order to further the onscreen action many people were quick to dismiss the game as little more than an updated “Dragon’s Lair” type of experience yet what made the game so unique was the varying choices the player was forced to make along the way … choices that would ultimately affect both the narrative and the other characters and lead to one of twenty two alternate endings.
But it’s time to put your DualShock controllers down folks for news reaches us that none other than David Milch, writer for hit series “NYPD Blue” and “Deadwood”, has signed on to adapt the game into a feature film to be released by New Line Cinema and Quantic Dream Pictures.
How the finished adaptation will fare on the silver screen is uncertain for whilst the game was possibly the most successful interactive movie experience of all time a straightforward adaptation would obviously strip the narrative of its wonderfully divergent outcomes and may well end up as little more than a sub-standard thriller. Yet with such talent involved here’s hoping the finished film will be every bit as successful as the video game and break the dreaded curse of videogame adaptations. At the very least it seems that we’re forecast plenty more “Heavy Rain” on the horizon …
