There had been rumours that a Superman prequel was on its way to the small screen, but it’s now official as Syfy have enlisted Man of Steel writer David Goyer to develop the series which has been titled Krypton.

Warner Horizon Television and DC Comics are overseeing this latest adaptation of one of their comic book properties (it joins Arrow, Gotham, The Flash, and a number of other in-development shows like Supergirl and Teen Titans), with FlashForward’s Ian Goldberg serving as an executive producer and the pilot’s writer.

According to the official description, Krypton takes place years before the Superman’s arrival, when the House of El was shamed and ostracised. It focuses on the his grandfather as he brings hope and equality to Krypton, turning a planet in disarray into one worthy of giving birth to the greatest Super Hero ever known.

This is quite the surprise, especially as many fans assumed it would focus on Superman’s parents, a duo who have obviously played a big role in the comic books and various live-action adaptations over the years.

As a result, it’s hard to shed any light on what Krypton will focus on as this is an area which has been largely unexplored in the source material. That’s also the case for Gotham of course, a series that has been met with a largely very positive response so far as it explores that city years before Bruce Wayne became Batman.
