At Comic-Con over the weekend, the big stories from Marvel’s sixty-minute panel were their confirmation that Guardians of the Galaxy was their second 2014 film, their preview of Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man test reel, and the full titles and logos of their 2013/14 line-up.
But what was also discussed over in San Diego was the possibility of Gwyneth Paltrow, who plays Pepper Potts, suiting up in the future.
“”Everyone at this table thinks it would be the coolest thing in the world to see Pepper get in the suit at some point,” said Kevin Feige of Marvel.
“We almost did it a few times; we talked about it a lot. I think we all share your enthusiasm for that, and we all want to see Gwyneth kick a little ass,” said Jon Favreau, director of the first two “Iron Man” films and a costar in all three.”
Paltrow starred alongside Robert Downey, Jr. in 2008’s Iron Man – the first film in Phase One of the Marvel Cinematic Universe – and reprised her role in Iron Man 2 and this year’s The Avengers.
In 2007’s The Invincible Iron Man arc, Potts has a suit of her own, especially designed for her, and adopts the nickname Rescue when she’s in it.
With Iron Man 3 still in production, currently filming out in North Carolina, it’s not yet known whether or not Paltrow will be suiting up for next year’s blockbuster or if it will be in the years to come. One way or another, it will hit theatres in the UK on 26th April, 2013 and the US on 3rd May, 2013.
Depending on how they want to do it – reading Wikipedia’s section on The Invincible Iron Man, it suggests a fair bit would have to happen to do it the original way – I think that it’s likely it would happen in a fourth Iron Man film, unless they simply suit her up à la James Rhodes / War Machine (Don Cheadle) in Iron Man 2.
But the fact that they’re all thinking about it is definitely good news. Seeing Potts suited up in the years to come would be amazing.
