Panzer 88 is set during the Second World War, as the five-man crew of a German tank try to make their way back home across Russia, all the while fighting a supernatural entity that is determined to stop them. It is written and directed by Peter Briggs (writer of Hellboy) who has been interviewed by horror blog Bloody Disgusting and threw some sensational concept art into the bargain as well.

It’s an extensive interview and you can catch it all here, but some of the highlights are as follows:-

  • WETA are working on the effects, which will include some motion capture for the creature
  • Casting is starting this week, with the director looking for an ensemble feel along the lines of Alien and The Thing. Luke Bakker is reading for the role of Heinz, the gunner
  • Shooting was originally planned for Scandinavia, but is more likely now to be in New Zealand, given WETA’s involvement
  • Although Briggs wants to satisfy the expectations of those looking for some “splatter”, he wants the film to be a quality production more akin to Aliens than Saw

All of the concept art is embedded below for your viewing pleasure. A supernatural war/horror film, with WETA on the effects and an Aliens vibe aspired to. Could be one to watch out for.

Dave has been writing for HeyUGuys since mid-2010 and has found them to be the most intelligent, friendly, erudite and insightful bunch of film fans you could hope to work with. He's gone from ham-fisted attempts at writing the news to interviewing Lawrence Bender, Renny Harlin and Julian Glover, to writing articles about things he loves that people have actually read. He has fairly broad tastes as far as films are concerned, though given the choice he's likely to go for Con Air over Battleship Potemkin most days. He's pretty sure that 2001: A Space Odyssey is the most overrated mess in cinematic history.
