Irish actor Chris O’Dowd has seen his Hollywood stock rise considerably since his winning turn in this summer’s much-praised comedy hit, Bridesmaids. He’s turning his attention towards a considerably different milieu for his next role, however.

According to Screen Daily, he’s been cast in an Australian feature called The Sapphires. Inspired by the true-life tale of a group of four Aboriginal soul singers in the 60’s who travelled to Vietnam to entertain the troops, O’Dowd will play the role of the talent scout who originally spotted the girls. Filming is scheduled to begin in Australia this month, and will later move on to Vietnam.

Feels like the makers could potentially be aiming for a Muriel’s Wedding-style break-out hit with this one. Two of the quartet are actually recording stars in their native country too. We’ll keep you posted as it develops.
