Gemma Chan has been cast to star opposite Brie Larson in Marvel’s upcoming Captain Marvel.

Chan is set to play the role of Captain Minnerva, a geneticist from the alien race Kree. Captain Minnerve is one of Marvel’s antagonists in the comics, She was an enemy of the rogue Kree agent Captain Mar-Vell, and later became the partner of Captain Atlas. Her powers include superhuman strength and durability and the power of flight through the conscious manipulation of gravitons.

With filming due to start next month, the film is expected to release on March 8, 2019, and will follow Carol Danvers (Larson), an Air Force pilot whose DNA is fused with that of an alien during an accident. The resulting alteration imbues her with the superpowers of strength, energy projection, and flight. The film will be set in the ’90s before the Avengers ever thought of assembling, and Samuel L. Jackson is expected to reprise his role as Nick Fury. Mississippi Grind directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck are helming the project.

Chan will be joining previously mentioned cast members include Ben Mendelsohn as the villain, Jude Law as Captain Mar-Vell, and Samuel L. Jackson, who will reprise his role as Nick Fury from the Avengers movies.

Chan is best known for her roles in Humans alongside her roles in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find them as Madam Ya Zhou and Transformers: The Last Knight. She is currently filming the TV series of Watership Down and will star as Bess of Hardwick in Mary Queen of Scots alongside Saoirse Ronan, Margot Robbie and David Tennant.
