Last night one of the most anticipated films of early 2018 had its moments in the spotlight as the red carpet was unfurled for a special screening of Mary Magdalene held at the National Gallery in London.

The film stars Rooney Mara, Joaquin Phoenix, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Tahar Rahim. Written by Helen Edmundson and Philippa Goslett, The film is directed by Garth Davis, whose previous film Lion was released to great acclaim, not least for its leading performance from Dev Patel.

A central theme running through our interviews from the event was the determination to tell this well known story from the point of view of an historical female figure whose reputation has been used and abused over the years. The director and cast talked about the importance of telling, not only the story of Mary Magdalene, but an accurate portrait of this spiritual heart of one of the most important moments in history.

Mary Magdalene Synopsis

An authentic and humanistic portrait of one of the most enigmatic and misunderstood spiritual figures in history. The biblical biopic tells the story of Mary (Rooney Mara), a young woman in search of a new way of living. Constricted by the hierarchies of the day, Mary defies her traditional family to join a new social movement led by the charismatic Jesus of Nazareth (Joaquin Phoenix). She soon finds a place for herself within the movement and at the heart of a journey that will lead to Jerusalem.
