Here’s some news (of the Super variety) for an otherwise quiet Sunday evening. It looks like Christopher Nolan and Zack Snyder have found an actor to slip into that iconic blue spandex and red underpants.

Deadline is reporting that relatively unknown UK actor Henry Cavill has been cast as Krypton’s favourite son. Cavill has been on the peripheries of Hollywood for a while now, and was previously one of the names mentioned for the part in Bryan Singer’s 2006 version. Snyder has made this statement about the actor:

“In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time, and I am honoured to be a part of his return to the big screen. I also join Warner Bros., Legendary and the producers in saying how excited we are about the casting of Henry. He is the perfect choice to don the cape and S shield.”

The 27 year-old has previously cropped up in small roles in Stardust and Tristan + Isolde, but is perhaps best known for your recurring role in TV’s The Tudors. His next high-profile role on the big screen will be in director Tarsem Singh’s Greek mythological adventure, Immortals.

It’s nice to see that Warner Bros. and Snyder have gone with a less starry name once again – a move that really is essential when portraying such a huge well-known pop culture figure like Superman.
