It was recently revealed that Simon Pegg (Shaun of the Dead) has been hired to rewrite Star Trek 3 alongside Doug Jung, the co-creator of Dark Blue and one of the writers on popular TV series, Banshee.

That was just weeks ago, but the rumour mill has now started up, with Breaking Bad and Godzilla star Bryan Cranston apparently eyed for a villainous role in the threequel. The report claims that the mysterious bad guy is described as “Bryan Cranston-like, to the point that Cranston himself has had words with the studio.”

“We don’t know just yet if he said yes, or if this is an all-new character or somebody from continuity, but because they’re shooting for Cranston we at least know the filmmakers want to bring the intensity.” Seeing him in Star Trek 3 would certainly be interesting, but it sounds like it’s far from a done deal as of right now.

The sites goes on to add that three major female roles are also set to be added to the third instalment of J.J. Abrams’ rebooted Star Trek franchise. Those are the President of the United Federation of Planets and a Starfleet ship’s captain who is “being set up as Kirk’s match.” The third is Dr. Leonard McCoy’s (Karl Urban) ex-wife, but it’s not clear at this point whether she’s a pre-existing character or a newly created one.

Justin Lin is directing Star Trek 3, with shooting expected to begin this April. The director is finishing up work on the first two episodes of True Detective. Stay tuned for more details as we beam them up!
