For many, myself included, Zoolander holds a cherished place in the affections. A hilarious film about the vain, stupid and deluded, with the finest joke in history about the unsuitability of a scale model as an educational facility, it comes as a source of genuine delight to hear of much firmer reports of a sequel.

In an interview with Empire Magazine, Stiller said that the sequel would be set a decade after the first film, with the fashion world having moved on from Derek and Hansel. As Stiller said, for that world,

“ten years is a thousand years. They’re both totally out of it and have to start from scratch and then there are things set up at the end of the first movie that we’re able to build on, like Derek and Matilda have a son, and Mugatu went to jail. There’s a lot there, I’m excited about the idea of doing it. It feels like it’s getting close to going.”

Empire go on to report however that Stuart Cornfeld (producer of Zoolander, Starsky & Hutch, Dodgeball, Blades of Glory and Tropic Thunder) holds out a little less hope, saying:-

“It’s hard to get any movie made. It’s frustrating, because I believe the script is incredible. It’s not just putting on those costumes again, it’s a great story to tell. We’ve got what I consider to be the best comedy script I’ve read in years and years, with jokes that haven’t been told before.”

So a little equivocal then. Stiller seems to have a strong idea, the producer is more than pleased with the script, but getting a green light still seems to be problematic. Maybe they should offer to make it in 3D, that should get the money men moving. Sigh.

Frankly, I would love to see a Zoolander sequel. I could wear my “I think I’m getting the black lung, Pop” t-shirt and everything. Until this eventually gets the go ahead (and I sincerely hope it will), we will have to content ourselves with memories of 2001.

“I became bullimic”, “you can read minds?”

Dave has been writing for HeyUGuys since mid-2010 and has found them to be the most intelligent, friendly, erudite and insightful bunch of film fans you could hope to work with. He's gone from ham-fisted attempts at writing the news to interviewing Lawrence Bender, Renny Harlin and Julian Glover, to writing articles about things he loves that people have actually read. He has fairly broad tastes as far as films are concerned, though given the choice he's likely to go for Con Air over Battleship Potemkin most days. He's pretty sure that 2001: A Space Odyssey is the most overrated mess in cinematic history.
