Apple Original Films has unveiled the first teaser trailer for ‘Being Heumann,’ a powerful new feature film telling the extraordinary true story of Judy Heumann and the disability rights movement.
Directed by Academy Award winner Siân Heder, the filmmaker behind ‘CODA,’ ‘Being Heumann’ follows a group of young disabled activists who come together to find their collective voice and fight against discrimination.
Set against the backdrop of the disability rights movement of the 1970s, the film centres on Judy Heumann, portrayed by Ruth Madeley, as she and a scrappy coalition of outsiders take matters into their own hands after their demands for change are repeatedly ignored.
They wouldn’t take Judy Heumann’s phone calls, so she took their building.
In 1977, what begins as one impulsive act develops into an extraordinary act of resistance, as hundreds of activists spontaneously occupy government offices and refuse to leave until the bureaucrat standing in their way, played by Mark Ruffalo, takes action.
As the occupation grows, the unlikely group finds itself at the centre of a movement that could transform the lives of millions. Bringing rebellion in all its forms into the hallowed halls of government, the accidental leaders must navigate a path forward where none has ever been paved for them.
Based on true events, ‘Being Heumann’ is described as a revolutionary, irreverent and deeply human story about ordinary people who refuse to accept a system designed to exclude them.
The teaser arrives just ahead of the film’s world premiere as the opening film of the Toronto International Film Festival on September 10, 2026.
