To celebrate the release of Being Elizabeth, the new historical series beginning on STARZ this week, we had the pleasure of sitting down with the cast to find out all about the epic new show.

Long before she ascended the throne, young Elizabeth Tudor was an orphaned teenager who became embroiled in the political and sexual politics of the English court. The death of King Henry VIII sets into motion a dangerous scramble for power as his 9-year-old son is crowned king, and he and his sisters become pawns for the great families of England and the powers of Europe who vie for control of the country. To survive the young Elizabeth Tudor must learn the rules quickly at a time in which every man or woman of the court is on the wheel of fortune, which may take them to a position of great power one moment, or the executioner’s block the next. Judgements are rendered quickly, and no one is safe.

Chatting to the cast – including star Alicia von Rittberg who takes the titles role; Jessica Raine, Tom Cullen, and Jamie Blackley – we talk about the timeliness of the show, why they were drawn to the scripts, and showing a period of Elizabeth’s life rarely seen on screen and why her story is as pertinent as ever, the epic settings they filmed in and around as well as the challenges of Covid, the hugely impressive ensemble and much more.
