Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice may have been a divisive movie with critics, but moviegoers have flocked to see the first big screen meeting between the Dark Knight and Man of Steel this weekend. In fact, the Zack Snyder helmed release is breaking records!

As well as having the biggest March opening of all-time, Batman v Superman’s debut weekend in North America is Warner Bros.’ biggest (topping Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2) and the movie came in fourth in the superhero genre behind only The Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron, and Iron Man 3, an undeniably impressive feat.

So, with a $170.1 million domestic haul, Batman v Superman exceeded expectations overseas with an additional $254 million in order to have the honour of having the highest worldwide opening weekend in history for superhero movies with a total of $424.1 million.

That’s far beyond the estimated $350 million analysts had it pegged at earlier this week, and while a day and date release with China certainly helped, that makes this no less impressive.

“There is no question this is an extraordinary achievement,” the studio’s domestic distribution chief Jeff Goldstein said today. “Clearly, audiences have embraced it and we are already seeing repeat business. It’s just fun. Often, there’s a disconnect between critics and audiences. It doesn’t take itself seriously. It’s just an enjoyable afternoon at the movies.”
